Christine Vel comes from Mont Buxton, Mahé in the Seychelles. She is the Director for Seychelles Tourism Board in South Africa and never misses a moment to show how accessible and affordable the Seychelles really is.
How did you fall in love with travelling?
Through my mother! It was always her dream to work in the tourism industry but ended up working in the finance sector. I guess it was sort of pursuing her dream and that was the best decision I ever took.
What kind of traveller are you?
I am a bit too prepared if I’m really honest. I usually plan my holidays six months in advance if not longer.
What’s your travel philosophy?
To learn about the local culture. I’m a huge fan of learning about the history of the place I’m visiting and I usually, if not always get someone local to take me around.
What are your top travel essentials?
My sunglasses, phone and comfy walking shoes.
Where was your most memorable trip?
Definitely Bali in 2019. It had always been on my bucket list and I was not disappointed. It reminded me so much of Seychelles in terms of the landscape but with a slightly different culture. I was so excited to be there I even embarked on a 9 hour excursion on the first day!
How has travelling changed your life?
I am able to adapt quickly to new places and different cultures, having not only travelled for holidays and work, but also having lived in various places across the globe.
When borders open again and the world starts to return to ‘a new normal’ what’s your first travel destination on your list?
Seychelles! I can’t wait to go back home to my islands and see my family and my dog.
Best travel advice you can share?
Be open minded to new cultures and new adventures and always, always wear comfortable shoes!
