Cape Town named one of the best cities in the world for eco-friendly travel

Cape Town has received yet another tourism accolade. The Mother City was recently named one of the world’s most eco-friendly travel destinations in a Tourlane survey.

Tourlane is a carbon–neutral travel company passionate about sustainable travel.

Data was gathered from hundreds of cities across the globe taking into account accessibility, green space, the ratio of tourists to locals and air quality to determine the best cities in the world for sustainable travel.

Berlin was named the most eco-friendly travel destination, according to the survey. Vienna in Austria came in second, while Munich in Germany secured third place.

Cape Town is the only South African city on the list at number 41.

CAPE TOWN’S COMMITMENT TO SUSTAINABLE PRACTICES

Said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Economic Opportunities, James Vos: “We are delighted that Cape Town was recognised as one of the world’s eco-friendly travel destinations. More and more visitors are looking for environmentally friendly destinations and authentic experiences and this accolade demonstrates Cape Town’s commitment to sustainable practices.”

Sustainability in tourism means implementing measures that will help minimise the impact of travel on the environment, while preserving the local conditions for future generations.

“Whether reaching their destination by train, or opting for cities outside of the typical tourist circuit, more travellers than ever are choosing to spend their vacations in an environmentally friendly way. Sustainability is changing the way people travel,” noted Tourlane in a statement.
