Michael Daiber, CEO of !Khwa ttu San Culture and Education Centre shares with ATW Connect the importance of responsible tourism.
Why do you think responsible tourism is important? Responsible tourism, being respectful and transparent, makes a positive impact on society, the environment and economy in all aspects pertaining to tourism. It is important because it ensures that tourism responsibly meets local needs and the protection of cultural and natural heritage by implementing sustainable practices that contribute to the well-being of the communities and the resources that they depend upon. By the same token travellers are equipped with information to make responsible choices.
What is the one thing you always highlight, when someone asks you why they should travel sustainably? By visiting a destination as a tourist and trying to make only a positive impact on that location’s environment, society and economy, you are doing your small part to make this earth a better place for all.
How do you experience green travel in Africa? Green travel in Africa seems to be on the increase. Our main client is a major international tour operator that brings their tourists an authentic, adventurous and sustainable travel experience.
What makes !Khwa ttu a unique destination? !Khwa ttu continues to serve and educate its surrounding communities. Before visiting the museum, many are completely unaware of the rich and globally important archaeology on their doorstep. They are also very surprised to learn how the San lived in their area. We are finding they commonly recognise their ancestry as directly related to the San and they openly express how this museum is ‘their museum’. Often this is a highly emotional connection as they, like many San, openly state that they never believed they would have such a place to represent themselves.
Why should people visit Africa? Africa is your home, welcome to your home! Visiting Africa provides visitors with new ways of thinking about South Africa and southern Africa, for the genetic story of the San places them at the heart of all human origin stories. Come visit for adventure and authenticity.
