It’s not every day that you can splash about with elephants, but that certainly seems to be the case for this lucky little guy at Mhondoro Safari Lodge & Villa located in the Welgevonden Game Reserve in the Waterberg (Limpopo).
The photograph shows Xander, the son of the GM couple, Fritz and Ronel Breytenbach, enjoying a swim during the early days of lockdown.
Xander has been in the bush since he was born and loves animals, birds and insects (even spiders!). He enjoys being outside, getting dirty, learning about animal tracks and never wants to wear shoes. He also loves swimming, especially when the elephants come by to visit the lodge’s saltwater swimming pool!
A mere 2h45-minute drive from Johannesburg, the landscape of Welgevoden is breathtakingly rich and diverse, stretching across 35 000 hectares. It is home to the Big 5, including a large white rhino population that is protected within the malaria-free reserve. Guided walks are popular with guests of the lodge, as is watching the resident herd of elephants who visit the waterhole at the lodge on a daily basis and who love a drink from the natural, salt-water swimming pools.
